What is Concussion Syndrome?
Concussion syndrome is a mild form of traumatic injury. As many as 30 – 50 % of children who have experienced a concussion will proceed to have post concussion syndrome.
What are the symptoms?
Children who have had a concussion may experience physical, mental or emotional symptoms. The physical symptoms may include headache, dizziness, impaired balance, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, sleepiness, or in some cases an inability to sleep.
Some children may experience ringing in the ears, visual disturbances, increased sensitivity to light and decreased sense of taste, smell or hearing.
They may also experience emotional symptoms such as irritability, anxiety, aggression and depression. Cognitive impairment such as amnesia or forgetfulness, difficulty concentrating and difficulty with abstractual thinking may result in a learning disability.
How long does it last?
Concussion syndrome is a set of symptoms that a child may experience for weeks, months or even years after a concussion.
